While any career in science depends on a solid academic grounding (at least a Bachelors degree), the value of practical skills and experience should not be minimized. There are many hands-on aspects to marine science. Since few people fulfill their dreams by sitting in front a computer all day, it is often these practical experiences that draw people to a marine science career path. There is an adage about how the world is held together by superglue, duct tape, and PVC pipes, and this is certainly applicable in marine biology.
